Product Story
When you toss your cushions in your Zen storage basket, it’s not just the tidying up process that makes you feel good.
The basket’s coiling cotton rope evokes the ripples raked into the gravel of Japanese zen gardens. Also known as karesansui (dry garden), zen gardens are tranquil, uncluttered spaces designed to encourage meditation. Gravel is raked into patterns that resemble water, with both the water and the act of raking considered relaxing.
Intrigued? Plan a trip to Kyoto, Japan’s spiritual centre of zen Buddhism. Here, the chants of Buddhist monks reverberate across the city’s many zen gardens. Don’t miss Japan’s most famous, Ryoanji Temple, which contains a rectangular plot of raked pebbles with 15 carefully positioned rocks – although you can only ever see 14 at once. Something to meditate on as you stow your cushions!
